The US Open, the third Major championship of the season, gets underway at at Los Angeles Country Club in California today, with Matt Fitzpatrick getting the defence of the title he won so brilliantly 12 months ago at 9.32pm (UK time) in the company of Open champion Cam Sith and rising US star Sam Burns.

Rory McIlroy starts at 9.54pm and will play with US PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Tommy Fleetwood, who was beaten in a play-off at last week’s Canadian Open, is among the earlier starters at 3.40pm (BST) and will be playing alongside 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry and two-time major winner Justin Thomas.

Other stand-out groups include world number one Scottie Scheffler playing with Collin Morikawa and Max Homa (4.13pm), while Jon Rahm is joined by Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele (4.24pm).

English amateur Barclay Brown, who earned his place through regional qualifying, tees off at 4.46pm, while fellow English qualifier JJ Grey, who plays on the Korn Ferry Tour in America, gets his first taste of Major golf under way at 10.27pm, in the second-to-last group of the day.

It is the first time Los Angeles has held the US Open since Ben Hogan won at Riviera 75 years ago, with Los Angeles Country Club’s undulating 7,423-yard, par-70 course set to prove a significant challenge to par thanks to its deep rough, length and fast greens.
