50 Words or Less

The Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood is arguably the most customizable and adjustable low-spin fairway wood ever offered.

Introduction

The Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood gets its name from the ultimate level of adaptability that the new Future Fit 33 hosel provides.  33 different options are available to fully customize the club to you and your needs, including loft adjustments of plus or minus two degrees and tons of lie adjustments down to tenths of a degree.  The LS model has all that adjustability specifically for the players who want one of the fastest and lowest spin models of fairway woods on the market.

Looks

The name Darkspeed perfectly suits the look of the Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood .  While the Max, Women’s Max, and X models all feature small red, gold, and blue accents on their respective soles, the LS model is all black.  It is also slightly smaller, with the 3-wood head only 174 ccs versus the Max and X models at 177 ccs.  The face looks slightly open when set beside a golf ball.

From the address position, the Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood has a spotless, streamlined matte black look.  Cobra’s trademarked crowned “C” is right in the clubhead’s center to help with alignment.  At the same time, the crown of the clubhead features a carbon pattern that has become a mainstay of many other woods in the last few years.  The sole features more glossy elements, namely, two 13-gram weights and one 3-gram weight.  The few graphics are simple and angular, reminiscent of stealth fighter jets.

Sound & Feel

The Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood feels solid and poppy, with a light springiness off the face.  That stability and strength in feel come from the materials used: a strong, light 8-1-1 titanium face and body with 60 grams of internal tungsten weights in the heel and toe.  The sound is an airy-but-substantial “CRACK” that I found to be quite addictive.  It’s easy to want to hit the club over and over again on the range to recreate that sound.

Performance

While the layperson may be overwhelmed with the 33 different hosel configurations for the new Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood, this is a very, very good thing for fitters.  Through trial and error, adjusting loft and lie will undoubtedly unlock a precise fit that just isn’t possible with any of the hosels of the other major manufacturers.  Honestly, even with just a bit of research and a torque wrench, the tinkerers of the golfing world will have a blast testing the potential of this club on their own.  Cobra makes the hosel easy to use by putting a QR code that guides you through how to use it.

Separate from what is undoubtedly the most customizable hosel in golf, there are also three weight ports on the sole of the fairway wood that can help you dial in the flight you want to see or help limit the one you don’t.  Putting the heavy weights in the toe and back helped mitigate my occasional hook.  It performed off of low strikes as well.  While other heads can get spinny, the Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood maintained low spin even off of low and low heel strikes.

The customization doesn’t stop with the weights or the hosel, though. The Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood can be ordered in a 3-wood (14.5°), HL 3-wood (16°), and 5-wood (17°).  I wish this model was also available in a 7-wood, as many players who use this category of club are beginning to see the benefits of high-lofted woods.  Other companies, like TaylorMade, have released their low-spin model in that loft this season [TM Qi35 Tour FW review HERE].  With that said, that fantastic loft sleeve can be utilized to make everything from a 2-wood to a 7-wood and everything in between.

I loved testing this fairway wood since I tend to launch the ball high and produce too much spin.  Compared to my gamer, it gave me lower spin, lower launch, and more ball speed, particularly from strikes higher in the face when I put the two heavier weights in front.  All of which, of course, add distance.  In that setting, this club becomes a lethal off-the-tee replacement.  It’s a fairway that is as close to a mini-driver as possible, especially with the loft down and weighting forward.

Conclusion

Cobra went all in on the idea of intense customization, and they hit a home run.  The Cobra DS-ADAPT LS fairway wood offers the potential to be one of the fastest, most precisely fit fairway woods outside of a tour truck.  Between adjustable weights and the Future Fit 33 hosel, this is a wholly unique low-spin fairway wood that demands to be tested when it comes time for you to upgrade your fairway woods.
