Caddington Golf Club to close

Caddington Golf Club in Bedfordshire is to close next week after it was sold to a private developer.

The final rounds at the Luton-based club are to be played on October 11, after which all club operations will shut down.

Members were informed of the sale in a letter sent out by club owners McGee Construction on September 13, which set out the timetable for closure following the club’s purchase by a company called Storm Golf.

In a statement, club manager Ryan McGee said: “While I appreciate this is disappointing news for our members, I can confirm that Caddington Golf Club recently reached an agreement to sell the golf course to Storm Golf. As a result, the golf club will close effective from October 12, 2024.”

Members who pre-paid their annual membership are being refunded the unused portion, while those who paid their fees monthly had their instalments stopped at the end of September, although all members will be allowed free access to the course from October 1-11.

Storm Golf has arranged a 10% discount for Caddington members to join nearby Chalgrave Manor Golf Club in Toddington, just north of Luton, but the reduced fee only applies to the first 100 members who apply.

Caddington Golf Club was founded in 1985, and started out as a 9-hole course before expanding to a 27-hole facility in 1995 with an 18-hole, 6,240-yard par-71 course and a 9-hole academy course. It was popular with employeess at the nearby Vauxhall Motors plant and the general public and was bought by McGee Construction Group in 2008.

It is unclear what Storm Golf’s intentions are for the Caddington site, as it has no track record of buying or operating golf clubs. The company has not issued a statement regarding its future plans.

John and Ryan McGee bought Caddington in 2008 and invested significant sums in developing the club
