Sheffield amateur Barclay Brown will tee it up at next week’s US Open after making it through Final Qualifying in California.

The 22-year-old Stanford student will join fellow Hallamshire member and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick at the Los Angeles Country Club on June 15.

Brown, who finished fourth in last month’s NCAA Championship – the top collegiate event of the season – was one of three players to book their places at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles.

Rounds of 65 and 67 saw him qualify in joint second, two shots adrift of Mexican amateur Omar Morales. The Yorkshireman’s ten-under final total left him in a tie alongside Spaniard David Puig.

Brown birdied his final hole to avoid having to make it through a play-off alongside Charley Hoffman, amateur Preston Summerhays and Josh Anderson. The American trio were left battle it out for the two remaining spots via a play-off, with Hoffman and Summerhays winning their place in the US Open.

At last year’s 150th Open at St Andrews, Brown also qualified through Final Qualifying. In the main event he made the cut after opening up with rounds of 68 and 70, but finished 79th after weekend rounds of 77 and 75.
