The Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime golf bag is a true luxury experience with premium materials and features throughout.  Loads of storage.  A comfortable carry, but the weight makes this a better choice for the rider.

Introduction

As bag names go, Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime is a mouthful.  However, that long names serves a purpose, telling you almost everything you need to know about this bag.  Fans of Big Max know that “Dri Lite” means this bag can withstand the elements.  “Hybrid” tells us that it’s meant for all modes of transportation.  “Prime” is a new moniker for Big Max, and it’s the indicator that this is a luxury golf bag, made of PU leather.  I put every aspect of this big name to the test for this review.

Looks

Big Max follows the luxury stand bag playbook with the Dri Lite Hybrid Prime, keeping the look simple, classic, and elegant.  The bag is largely monochromatic, and the PU leather gives it an upscale look.  There is very little branding: “Big Max” on the towel hook and legs and the company’s logo above the handle.  Those three marks also account for almost all the contrasting colors.

Where the Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime separates itself from some other luxury bags is in the color choices.  This bag is offered in four colors: off white, black, forest green, and navy.

Features

To be a true hybrid bag – a mix of walking and riding characteristics – golfers expect a good deal of storage.  The Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime delivers with seven pockets.  On the back of the bag, there’s the deepest cooler pocket I’ve ever seen and a ball pocket that can devour four dozen balls with ease.

The left side of the bag features two smaller pockets for snacks, sunscreen, or other accessories.  On the right side, you’ll find a cavernous, full-length apparel pocket.  Two smaller pockets sit on top of that: the velour-lined pocket up top and a subdivided “Value Organizer” below.  Not only does the Dri Lite Hybrid Prime allow you to tote a ton of stuff, it keeps it really well organized.

The other key features are all in place, as well.  A glove holder and pen holder sit on either side of the handle.  The towel hook is a large, metal hexagon that gives the bag more upscale appeal.  It’s large enough to accommodate both a towel and a rangefinder case, if you so choose.

Performance

My single favorite thing about the Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime is the top.  Like the original Dri Lite Hybrid [review HERE], it has a 14-way top with full-length dividers for each segment.  If you want to carry 14 clubs with midsized or jumbo grips, this is the bag for you.  The Prime version goes a step further by covering the divider in a soft, plush material so that it won’t scratch your shafts.

Flipping to the bottom of the bag, the base and stand are superb.  The Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime has a full, hinged base so that it’s ultra stable when standing upright or propped on its legs.  This full base also makes it stand better on a push or riding cart.  Finally, the leg snap gets my first ever “A” – even when empty, the legs move in and out energetically.

Big Max also put a lot of thought into making the Dri Lite Hybrid Prime a comfortable bag to carry.  The padding on the backpack straps is substantial, as is the cushion where the bag rests on your back.  If you’re not going to carry this bag far, you can easily clip off the backpack straps for better access to the pockets.  Handles on the top, spine, and bottom make it easy to get the Dri Lite Hybrid Prime in and out of your trunk.

My only complaint about the Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime is its weight.  This isn’t a true complaint – all the bags in the luxury category are heavier than average – as much as something you should be aware of.  At 6.4 pounds, this is not an every day carry (walkers should check out the Dri Lite Feather HERE).  If you walk only a few rounds a year, you can make this work if you keep the pockets fairly empty, but it’s much better on a push cart or riding cart, loaded up with a couple beverages.

Conclusion

The idea of a luxury golf bag may seem silly to some, but using the Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Prime does feel like an elevated experience.  This bag looks premium, and all of the touch points feel solid and plush.  If you want to chauffeur your golf clubs in the golf bag equivalent of a Rolls Royce, this is it.
