Another Michael Block party will be part of the festivities this week at the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge, set to tee off Thursday at Colonial Country Club. The 46-year-old California PGA pro was invited following his tie for 15th at the PGA Championship. His inspiring week was punctuated when he dunked a hole-in-one on the 15th hole Sunday. A strong post-major field is set to tee off in Fort Worth, Texas, with PGA runners-up Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland and three-time major champion Jordan Spieth the headliners. Tony Finau and Max Homa, both two-time winners this season, also are among the 11 top-30 golfers in the Charles Schwab Challenge 2023 field. Sam Burns, who defeated Scheffler in a playoff last year, will try to become just the second golfer to win the tournament in consecutive years. Ben Hogan did it twice — from 1946-47 and 1952-53 — which is why Colonial is known as “Hogan’s Alley.”
Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler as the 4-1 favorite in its latest 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge odds. Spieth (12-1), Finau (14-1), Hovland (14-1) and Collin Morikawa (16-1) also are favorites in the Charles Schwab Challenge 2023 field, and Burns and Homa are priced at 22-1. Block, who has made the cut in four of 24 PGA Tour appearances, is a massive 500-1 longshot. Before making any 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Sia Nejad.
Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Wyndham Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.
In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, SportsLine debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.
Now, Nejad has studied the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of Nejad’s PGA picks and analysis.
Top 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge expert picks
One surprise: Nejad is fading Morikawa this week, even though he is among the biggest names in the field. The two-time major champion at age 26 remains one of the best iron players in the game, but his poor putting has been costing him results. The California native ranks 169th on tour in strokes gained putting, and he’s 107th around the greens. He puts his drives in the fairway (sixth in accuracy), but his lack of distance (148th) will put him at disadvantage. Morikawa has four top-10 finishes in 15 events this season, with just one since February.
On the other hand, Nejad sees value in Burns, who is one of the best putters in the world and tore up this course last year. The 26-year-old went 8 under par on the weekend to surge to the top, then dropped a 38-foot putt to top Scheffler in the playoff. Burns ranks fourth on tour in strokes gained putting, and he also is excellent off the tee, ranking 21st in total driving. Burns’ irons can be hit-or-miss, but he can fix a lot of problems with his putter. He has already repeated as champion once in his brief career, winning the Valspar Championship in 2021 and ’22.
